The institute traces its history to the Experimental Field of 1895, with the breeding department organised in 1912. Over 114 years the Odesa breeding school has created hundreds of crop varieties and hybrids.

Today the institute is a NAAS coordination center for seed systems and crop genetics, conducting research in molecular genetics, biotechnology and breeding of adaptive varieties.
