About us

The research work at the Institute is carried out at 10 departments and 5 laboratories by the staff that consists of 316 employees including 105 research workers which are represented by 13 D.Sc. and 55 Ph.D.

There are the following departments:

- Wheat Breeding and Seed Production Department; Head Lytvynenko M.A., Dr. Sc. (Agriculture), professor, academician of NAAS; the main directions of activity – the development of methods of breeding and seed production of  winter bread wheat, the breeding of winter bread wheat varieties of universal type with high grain quality and adapted to climate change and modern cultivation technologies

- Laboratory of Breeding and Seed Production of Intensive Wheat Varieties; Head Nakonechnyi M.Yu., PhD (Agriculture); the main directions of activity – the breeding of winter bread wheat varieties of intensive type, tolerant to drought, possessing frost and winter hardinessandmanedisease resistance;

  - Laboratory of Breeding and Seed Production of Winter Durum Wheat; Head Palamarchuck A.I., PhD (Agriculture); the main directions of activity –the create of methods of breeding of winter bread durum wheat, the breeding of winter durum facultative wheat varieties, adapted to condition of cultivations, with high grain quality;

- Barley Breeding and Seed Production Department; Head Legkun I.B., PhD (Agriculture); the main directions of activity – the development of theoretical basis of breeding to improve barley genotype by the indexes of productivity, resistance, quality, practically feasible in cultivation and the create on this basis the essentially new varieties of spring and winter barley;

- Maize Breeding and Seed Production Department; Head Bielousov A.O., Dr. Sc.  (Agriculture); the main directions of activity – the development of theoretical basis of maize breeding for adaptability, creating initial material and hybrids of different maturity groups that combine increased heat and drought tolerance with high potential of grain productivity; breeding hybrids of sugar sorghum as a raw material for ethanol production;

- Sunflower Breeding and Seed Production Department; Head Varenyk B.F., PhD (Agriculture); the main directions of activity – the development of methods, breeding technologies and the creating of genetically diverse initial material, inbred lines and highly productive sunflower hybrids of different maturity groups with high oil content including high oleic acid content;

- Department of Breeding, Genetics and Seed Production of Leguminous Crops; Head Bushulian O.V., PhD (Agriculture); the main directions of activity – the development of the theoretical basis of leguminous crops breeding for increased seed productivity, with improved seed technological properties, with tolerance to unfavorable environmental conditions, practically feasible in cultivation, and creating of pea, soybean, chickpea, alfalfa varieties on this basis;

- Department of the Genetic Basis of Breeding; Head Rybalka O.I., Dr. Sc. (Biology);  the main directions of activity – the study of grain quality genetics at the level of proteins and enzymes; the creating of initial material for breeding of conventional varieties of cereals and varieties for special technological use of grain;

- Department of Seed Production; Head Wyshnevs’kyi V.V., PhD (Agriculture);  the main directions of activity – the study of biological aspects of increasing the crop yield and quality properties of seed; organizational and methodological guidance of growing seed of higher reproduction at the experimental farms of the Institute, the research ofseed standardization;

- Department of General and Molecular Genetics; Head Fayt V.I., Dr. Sc. (Biology); the main directions of activity – investigations are directed to studies genetical systems controlling adaptive reactions; cytological mechanisms of alien traits inheritance; development and testing DNA marker systems for identification and selection of wheat, barley, maize, sunflower genotypes with a complex of economic valuable traits, resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses;

- Department of Phytopathology and Entomology; Head Babayants O.V., Dr. Sc. (Biology); the main directions of activity – solving the problems of immunity in connection with breeding of cereal, leguminous and oilseed crops for resistance to phytopathogens and pests;

- Department of Resistance to Abiotic Factors; Head Feoktistov P.O., PhD (Biology); the main directions of activity – the development of physiological methods of an evaluation of selected plants for resistance to thermal stress and deficiency of moisture in the soil;

- Laboratory of Plant Biochemistry; Head Molodchenkova O.O., Dr. Sc. (Biology); the main directions of activity – the development of biochemical methods for assessing cereal, leguminous, oilseed, fodder crops for the basic characteristics of quality and adaptability in the process of breeding;

- Laboratory of Tissue Culture; Head Zambriborshch I.S., PhD (Biology);  the main directions of activity – the development of techniques for making of the initial material and improving the breeding process through in vitro culture;

- Laboratory of Cultivar Investigationand Genetic Resources; Head SechniakV.Yu. PhD (Agriculture), the main directions of activity – the introduce and study of plant genetic resources for using in breeding programs.  

Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute has 5 experimental farms with about 21000 hectares of arable land at its disposal which supply annually over 10000 tons of pre-basic and basic seed for seed and grain producers.

Educational Activities: Conferences and workshops on the problems of plant breeding; Skill courses for agronomists and seed-producers. Postgraduate studies in genetics, molecular genetics, biotechnology, plant breeding and seed production. A specialized Scientific Council confers degrees of Doctor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy on above-mentioned subjects.The scientific issue, monographs, catalogs of breeded varieties and hybrids, methodological recommendations are printed in institute.
